ShalinCraft Lampshades Multicolored Applique Embroidered Fabric Indian-Style (clamp110)
ShalinCraft Lampshades Multicolored Applique Embroidered Fabric Indian-Style (clamp110) Enjoy these lovely, colorful applique embroidered lampshades handmade in India. Among the traditional textiles of India, the art of applique work occupies a distinguished place. Applique, which is a French term, is a technique by which the decorative effect is obtained by superposing patches of colored fabrics on a basic fabric, the edges of the patches being sewn in some form of stitching. The base cloth is usually colored. Some of the specially prepared motifs have exclusive embroidery work and some have mirror work. It is Orissa and especially in Pipli that the craft has a living and active tradition continuing over centuries. As with many other handicrafts of Orissa, the roots of the applique craft form is interwined with the traditions of Lord Jagannath, the deity of the Puri temple. The applique items are mainly used during processions of the deities in their various ritual outings. The stitching process varies from item to item and come under six broad categories. Sometimes embroidered patterns are also used and in a few items mirror work is incorporated. The layout of various motifs and patterns vary according to the shape of the piece. Of the more common motifs are the elephant, parrot, peacock, ducks, creepers, trees, flowers like lotus, jasmine, half moon, the Sun and Rahu.

Voting Question: Should I get my boyfriends Separated Parents a christmas gift?
My boyfriend and I have been together for over a year, so this is our second christmas together. Last year, his mother, a jewelry designer, gave me a GORGEOUS pair of handmade earrings as a gift, even though we had only been together for a few months. I've stayed at his parents house many different times, and they've always been wonderfully kind and accomodating. Unfortunetley, this year, they are in the middle of getting a divorce. They've been married for 26 years, and are still living together for the time being until better arangements can be made. I know that Its appropriate to give them a Christmas gift, but I don't know what to get them. His father is a recovering alcoholic, so i think it would be crass to offer a bottle of wine. Do i get 2 gifts? Or 1? Please help! Thanks and Merry Christmas y'all! (more...)

Resolved Question: we have no money this year for christmas...?
my fiance and i are really struggling. we have both lost our jobs and are not finding new ones. it was of course the obvious solution to say no gifts this year... minus some handmade ones for others. but it is such a depressing time already for us, and now with the holidays coming i am worried we will not be able to keep our heads up. every year i adore the advent calendar and counting down to christmas. i have decided instead of gifts to make each day an activity we can do, but what are we counting down to? how do we make christmas day special when we can do nothing to celebrate? what are things we can do on christmas to make the day special even though there's no big meal or gifts? i sitll want to wake up and be excited that it's christmas! i know others are in this same situation, and i would love it if you'd share your ideas. thank you. the food kitchen that feeds the homeless in our county has already signed up for enough help... otherwise i would agree that would have been a lovely way to get up and start the day. we could make friends for when we're homeless the following month! lol and thanks for the offer of money...? but we just need jobs. we are well educated and experienced professionals in our field and want to earn our money. we just aren't finding the opportunities to do so! and i am again emphasizing we don't care about gifts!!! it's not about that... we are looking for things we can do to make the day special. things to make the day something we can still look forward to and we are also atheists. you have all been very kind to answer. thank you. wonderful answers everyone, thank you so much for sharing. Resolved Question: I'm totally lost on what to get my aunt for Christmas! Any ideas?
She's really into "nice" things. I've done lotions, jewelry, a handbag, a spa day, picture frames and clothes. She's loved them all but I don't want to repeat gifts. She's not into handmade things, she doesn't like cooking or nature, doesn't spend a lot of time outside. She spends most of her time on the phone or in her car and a lot of time with her boyfriend. Resolved Question: If you received a handmade Christmas gift, would you think they're cheap?
If someone gives you something that's handmade for Christmas, what do you think? "Wow, they're cheap. They didn't buy me anything!" or do you think that they're struggling financially... or do you think that they just wanted to make something you really like? My problem is that my husband and I aren't fortunate to have enough money to buy Christmas gifts for aunts, uncles, sisters, mothers, grandparents, etc. I don't know how anyone does it! So my husband made wood scroll saw cut outs and I painted them. The things we made so far turned out really neat. For my husband's sister's birthday he made her a chair and painted it. His other sister who's 16 said, "Wow you were too cheap to buy anything." And that really offended me because we didn't have the money to buy anything and didn't want to show up to a party without a gift. I thought family would understand, but apparently not. I'm afraid to give my husband's family these things we made together because they might just throw them to the side and sigh because we didn't buy them anything! (more...)
